Successful replacement of Loenerslootse bridge.
On Monday morning 30 June between 5 and 6 am, the combination KWS-Mercon has successfully replaced the Loenerslootse bridge. This bridge overarches the Amsterdam-Rhine canal, the N201 motorway and the railway Amsterdam-Utrecht.
The Amsterdam-Utrecht railway was already put into operation again early on Monday morning and also cyclists and pedestrians could as well cross the new bridge. For the replacement of the bridge, the train and car traffic was obstructed the whole weekend as planned and inland shipping only several hours.
Amid great public interest, the most spectacular part of the complete operation took place; the removal of the old bridge and installation of the new bridge. A special viewpoint was set up for spectators to safely watch this impressive operation.
The Loenerslootse bridge is the fifth bridge within the KARGO (Kunstwerken Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal Groot Onderhoud) project that is being replaced or renovated. In total this €90 million project, granted by the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment (Rijkswaterstaat) encompasses the renovation of three and replacement of five steel arch bridges over the Amsterdam-Rhine canal, Lek canal and Upper IJ.
